iPad 9 discontinued: That's it for Lightning
The end of Apple's proprietary interface is near: everything on the iPad has now been converted to USB-C. The iPad 10 gets a new price.

At the same time as yesterday's iPad keynote, Apple introduced changes to its iPad range. The iPad 9, the last model with the traditional Lightning connector, has been discontinued and is now only available from resellers in residual quantities (ab 319,41 €). Apple has stated that it will continue to sell the device for the education market – at 329 US dollars in the USA.
iPad 10 with USB-C becomes cheaper
The new entry-level iPad is therefore the iPad 10 from 2022. It is now sold with (very slim) 64 GB from 429 euros – in the USA from 349 dollars. The starting price in Germany was once 579 euros. The iPad 10 has a modern USB-C port and an A14 Bionic chip, which once made its debut in the iPhone 12. The device is compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil (which means an adapter is required) or with the newer Apple Pencil with USB-C, which, however, lacks the sensor technology for pressure sensitivity, which can interfere with drawing.
In addition to the new iPad Pro M4 and the iPad Air M2, each with 11 and 13 inches, only the iPad mini remains in the range. It has a nice compact form factor, but is already from 2021 and therefore offers outdated technology. Apple would like at least 599 euros for it in Germany - with 64 GB. The more sensible 256 GB version costs 769 euros. With the iPad mini, however, it is better to wait for Apple to present a new series. This is hopefully expected before the end of the year.
Apple differentiates models more strongly from each other
With the OLED screens in the iPad Pro M4, Apple has differentiated its professional tablets more strongly from all other series. The difference to the iPad Air M2 is quickly apparent - the devices are thinner and lighter and the display is quite impressive, as the first hands-on tests on Tuesday showed.
However, the question arises as to who wants to pay these prices. The iPad Pro M4 costs at least 1,199 euros (11 inches). At least Apple includes 256 GB of flash memory. The 13-inch model can cost up to almost 3,700 euros if you want all the accessories such as the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil.
